M.C. Mary Kom creates History
M.C. Mary Kom had spent sleepless nights in training for her final, said her sixth and latest World championships. She said sixth and the latest World Championship crown was the most difficult one because of the pressure of performing in front of home crowd.
Mary cried for a few minutes while thanking thousands of supporters in the stands, said this series of the Worlds posed the toughest challenge for her.
It was the most difficult edition due to the pressure. From the very beginning,"I faced all the strong opponents,” said Mary at the press conference. “Today I could not control my emotions as I got to know that I am the only one from India to win six gold medals.”
The 35-year-old boxing champion said her experience was her biggest asset. She said she cannot remember (how she won) the previous World titles. She also said that previously, she used to fight with tremendous energy but now her experience makes things easier for her."
“Even today I train quite hard. There is not a single day when I don’t train. I make it sure that I train at least once a day. As long as I train hard no one will be able to beat me easily.”
She admitted that switching from 48kg to 51kg to seek a berth in the Olympics could be difficult for her. Mary said she would try her best to make it to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Games. Mary Kom said rigorous training and experience stood her in good stead.
Foreign coach Raffaele Bergamasco said, “Mrs. MC Mary was under enormous stress. All because of the home pressure. She could not sleep for two nights even though she kept smiling all the time.
“Two months ago, Mary was far ahead of this boxer (Hanna Okhota) but today it was a neck to neck contest. I had advised Mary not to go all out in the round one. Had she done that, the opponent would have finished her because she is young and strong,” said Bergamasco.
