How Bumrah became the best ODI bowler in the world

In a span of 18 months since the Australia tour of January 2016, Jasprit Bumrah has taken such a gigantic leap that he is now among the top five One Day International (ODI) and top two T20 bowlers in world cricket.
In March 2015, Mohammad Shami had leapfrogged 14 places to get to No.11 in the International Cricket Council (ICC) ranking while Bhuvaneshwar Kumar had jumped seven places to become No.7 in October 2014. In this backdrop, Bumrah leaped 27 places to fourth place after India’s 5-0 win against Sri Lanka.
“Jasprit has been our most effective short-format bowler in the last 18 months,” Virat Kohli said after Bumrah was judged man of the series in Sri Lanka last month.
Gujarat's dream of winning Ranji Trophy threatened to come to a screeching halt. Anxiety had crept in the dressing room, and not only the junior players but even the support staff was also worried.
It was the fourth day of the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy semi-final between Gujarat and Jharkhand. Gujarat's Manprit Juneja and Hardik Patel were the overnight batsmen with the score reading 100/4 after their team had conceded a slender 18-run lead. Understandably, Jharkhand fancied their chances.
It was a precarious position for Parthiv Patel's team, who had made its way to the semi-final largely on the back of big first-innings leads and managed only two outright wins. By contrast, Jharkhand had five. What made it worse was that Rush Kalaria, Gujarat's third seamer, had broken down due to a shoulder injury and was not available to bowl.
Mumbai Indians' death-over specialist Jasprit Bumrah should get the nod in India's ICC Champions Trophy squad, believes Mumbai Indians' bowling coach Shane Bond.
"I will be surprised if he is not in it (the squad). He will be a good bowler in all formats. At the moment he is a good ODI and T20 bowler," the former New Zealand fast bowler said on Tuesday.
Bumrah has been Mumbai's preferred bowler in the death overs due to the indifferent form of Sri Lanka's sling-arm pacer Lasith Malinga.
